They’re Ready for School… But Are We?
There's nothing quite like the start of a new school year. It's a whirlwind of emotions: pride, excitement, sadness, and fear all somehow existing at the same time.
One day, your little one is asking you to tie their shoes, kiss away their boo-boos, and lie beside them until they fall asleep. The next, you're standing outside a classroom door trying to hold it together as they walk in without looking back.
You think about all the things they'll experience without you there. Who will they sit next to at lunch? Will they feel comfortable asking their teacher for help? Will someone invite them to play at recess? Will they be okay?
You've spent years preparing for this moment. You've read the books, asked your mom friends for advice, practiced the routines, nurtured their growth, and talked through all your worries. But no one really prepares you for the moment you realize your little one isn't quite so little anymore.
Because starting school isn't just a milestone for our children. It's one for us, too.
It's the beginning of letting go, little by little. The beginning of watching them build a life beyond your home and your family. They'll discover new interests, form friendships, and have experiences you'll know only through stories shared around the dinner table. Slowly, they'll grow into the people they're meant to become.
And if you're a parent of more than one child, you'll probably discover something surprising: while some parts feel easier, this one still tugs at your heartstrings.
The routines are familiar. You know what to expect. You've packed the lunchboxes before, labeled the backpacks, and stood outside the classroom door more times than you can count.
But watching your child walk into a classroom for the first time? That feeling never really goes away.
Every child is different, and every goodbye carries its own weight. You'll still catch yourself remembering the baby they once were. You'll still wonder if they'll be okay. You'll still find yourself asking, "How did we get here so fast?"
Because no matter how many times you've done this before, you're not saying goodbye to the same little person. You're watching another one of your children take their own brave step into the world, and that will always feel a little bittersweet.
The truth is, this is a big transition for both of you. Just as your child is figuring out a new classroom, new routines, and new friendships, you're stepping into a new version of parenting. Suddenly, you're learning teacher names, trying to remember which day is library day, juggling school events, and introducing yourself to other parents you hope will become familiar faces.
It's a lot.
So if this season feels a little heavier than you expected, that's okay. It takes time to find your footing, just like it does for your child. You can miss them and be incredibly proud of them at the same time. You can be excited for everything that's ahead while quietly grieving the little routines you're leaving behind.
That's the funny thing about parenting: our hearts somehow make room for all of it at once.
If you find yourself tearing up in the school parking lot, lingering a little longer at drop-off, or wondering where the time went, know this: you're not alone.
This part of parenting is both scary and beautiful. And somehow, we're all learning to hold on and let go at the very same time.
